For example, an earthquake in Japan in 2011 measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale caused a devastating tsunami and cut off electricity supplies, resulting in economic losses amounting to trillions of yen. Apart from physical damage, earthquakes also have an impact on people’s mental health. Many individuals experience post-earthquake trauma, so it is important to provide psychological support to victims. The natural environment is also not immune from the impact of earthquakes. There are changes in land shape, landslides and habitat destruction, which disrupt the balance of the ecosystem. Prevention and mitigation of earthquake risk is very important. Countries in earthquake-prone areas usually implement strict building codes, as well as carry out emergency simulations to help communities prepare for disasters. Education regarding earthquakes needs to be improved to increase awareness of potential dangers and ways to deal with emergency situations. Earthquake monitoring technologies, such as seismometers and GPS, are now used to predict the probability of an earthquake occurring, although high-accuracy predictions remain a challenge. With the combined efforts of the government, scientists and local communities, it is hoped that the negative impacts of earthquakes can be minimized.
