The Basics of Poker
The game of poker is played with a standard pack of 52 cards. Some variants use more than one pack or add jokers to the deck. Poker cards are ranked from Ace high to Ace low, with tens being higher and lower cards being lower. The five cards in a poker hand form a hand, known as a hand. Wild Cards may also appear in some games, which can take any suit, including aces.
The Hendon Mob has compiled the top 100 players in every year of the Money List since 1971. This is the foundation on which poker is built. The game’s success depends on how well the foundation is laid. Without it, the game will fail to achieve its full potential. It requires discipline to remain focused, and to not become frustrated when your initial hand isn’t winning. To succeed in poker, you must maintain a good sense of discipline.
In a typical game of Poker, the player to the left of the button must post a small blind (small wager) and a big blind (big bet). The purpose of the blinds is to provide players with something to chase. Without them, players would be tempted to “blind off” and fold preflop, or to bet with a pair of aces. However, with blinds in place, players can increase their chances of winning by increasing their stakes at each betting interval.
