Poker is a card game played by two or more players. The cards are dealt face down and there is a round of betting before the players reveal their hands. The player with the best hand wins. A high level of skill is needed to achieve a positive win rate in poker, but there is also a substantial element of luck involved. Emotional and superstitious players almost always lose, while those who view the game in a cold, analytical, mathematical manner can break even or make a profit.

The game is played with a standard 52 card English deck of playing cards. Usually, two different back colors are used for the cards. Some games may use jokers or wild cards as well. The game can be played with two to seven players, but the optimal number is five or six.

When it is your turn to act, you must first place an ante into the pot, which is normally equal to the amount of the last raise or bet made by someone else. After you have placed your ante, you may say “call” to match the bet made by the player to your left, or you can say “raise” to increase the size of your own bet.

The highest ranking hand is a Royal Flush (Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten of the same suit). Other winning hands include Four of a Kind; Straight; Three of a Kind; Pair; and High Card. In the event of a tie, the highest unmatched card breaks the tie.
