How to Play Poker
Typically, poker is played with a pack of cards. The cards are ranked from Ace to ten. The higher the card, the more likely that player has a hand.
The game is played with a group of people around a table. Players bet into a central pot, which is collected at the end of the round. The winner is the player with the highest hand.
Most games are played with an ante. This is a small bet, usually around $1 or $5. The ante can be used for forced bets. These can be a blind bet, where a player is told to bet a certain amount, or a forced bet, where a player is required to place a certain amount of chips into the pot.
Most games require a large table with chairs. A standard pack of 52 cards is used. These are shuffled before each player is dealt.
When each player has their hand revealed, they will decide whether to bet, raise, or fold. If a player chooses to fold, they will drop out of the pot, but not lose their right to the original pot. If a player chooses to raise, they are obligated to bet at least as much as the previous bettor.
A high card is important in breaking ties. In most games, the highest card breaks ties when two or more people have the same hand. In some games, the highest card may actually be the lowest card.
