Slot

The word Slot is an obsolete spelling of the French word “slot.” It was first recorded in 1747 and means to cut or provide with a slot. By 1888, it had come to mean “a small opening for something to fit into.” In the English language, the word was used to refer to positions in games. Since the 1960s, it has also come to mean “a place where something can be placed.” Slot is also used as a noun for the area between the faceoff circles on an ice hockey rink.

The word Slot is derived from Middle Dutch and Low German. It is a cognate of Old Norse slot, Old High German sloz, and Old Frisian slod. It is a derivative of the Proto-Germanic root *slod “to close.” It is similar to the English word peg, which is derived from the Old Norse word slod.

The word slot has many grammatical functions. It can fit into any morpheme sequence. It is also an interior opening on a copy desk. It’s usually occupied by the chief copy editor. It’s also used in aviation to designate a position in an airport or air-traffic authority. And despite its humble origins, the word slot has come to be a powerful tool. If you haven’t heard of slots before, it’s time to brush up on your vocabulary.

To make a slot type work with a particular utterance, map the slots to different entities. For example, a hotel in New York can be mapped to an entity value (Big Apple). You can also define custom slot types by entering the name of the entity in the Slots tab. Once you’ve done that, click the “Add” button and select the slot type. It’s that simple. Then, add as many slots as you want to utter.
